Mapping the Sea: Barra (09:00, 2013)
Ex-fisherman, and local historian, Calum a’ Chal recites from memory names of places around the coast of the island of Barra, Outer Hebrides, Scotland.
A second screen shows film, video and digital media based around the sea. This ranges from Super 8 film shot by the artist in the early 1990s showing individual fishermen working closely with the sea, along with digital media based on recent marine technologies and high definition footage of an industrial sea-food processing factory, suggesting a less direct engagement with the marine environment.
This version of Mapping the Sea: Barra features a split-screen (one screen). It can also be shown as a two-screen installation featuring two video projected images and sculptural objects.
The film was commissioned by Cape Farewell as part of their Sea Change series of commissions.
