S C A P E (2008)

SCAPE  articulates a cross-section of Tasmanian landscape through an arrangement of 165 highly-polished stainless steel poles. It was commissioned for outside the new Hydro Tasmania Consulting HQ and was produced in collaboration with Australian artist John Vella.

The piece is visually active in the sense that it reflects back, as well as distorts, the surrounding landscape and highlights the ever-changing ambient light conditions. The poles also gently vibrate in response to different wind patterns.

The research and design stages were undertaken via Skype, email and telephone with John Vella with final design details agreed on prior to installation stage, once I’d traveled to Tasmania.

The piece was commissioned by arts@work for Hydro Tasmania Consulting for the entrance to their new Headquarters in Cambridge, north of Hobart, Tasmania.

SCAPE consists of 165 highly-polished stainless steel poles, over an area of 70m x 4m. The poles are framed within a ground design consisting of galvanised-steel edging and blue-metal gravel. It was installed in June 2008.
