One Hundred Books is an installation of one hundred glass ‘book covers’ on twenty glass shelves, located in the entrance foyer of the new Library and Learning Centre at Leeds Metropolitan University.
The featured books were chosen by LMU staff who were asked to select works that had a personal or academic significance within their lives. During daylight hours the book covers appear as deep blue tablets of glass. As night falls they become illuminated; creating a glowing blue composition against the honey-coloured brickwork. Each night, text phrases sampled from each book, slowly emerge from the exterior brickwork and gradually float up and out the top of the library building. This was the first permanently installed outdoor video projection artwork in the UK at the time.
